I particularly remember a couple of my favorite gifts received as a kid; Rock’em Sock’em Robots and the robot from Lost in Space. Yes I was, and perhaps still am, somewhat of a space geek.
I also think back to some of the “special” gifts we gave our kids over the years and what they truly valued and remembered as young adults. Interestingly, what they remember and treasure most are not the material gifts received for Christmas or birthdays, but the time spent as a family.
Much of these family memories were created by the places we went, experiences we shared, and the trips we took. We took many looong trips, or so the percepton from the back seat goes. This despite The typical sibling fights that occur as well as the over-tiredness occurs that on long car rides.

Even more memorable than playing robotic boxer or pretending to be a space family was the time together and especially the few trips we were able to take. None of them were extravagant. Going to the mountains in the summer or even just a baseball game with dad. That trumps anything that requires unwrapping.
Explore nature with your kids and marvel at the beauty that God has provided us. Examples are all around us. Visit our national or state parks, glaciers, beaches, take a walk or hike, kick a soccer ball around, or play catch. Each of these activities spent with mom or dad is more memorable than the latest electronic gadget.
Daily activities can have big impacts as well. Do not minimize the importance of meals together as well as family prayer time including giving thanksgiving to God. Include a daily family Rosary into your routine. Do all things according to God’s will.
We have limited time with our kids. Soon they will grow up and develop other interests. Parents will age and die. Provide your families with experiences they will remember for the rest of their lives and pass along to their own families.
Time is the most precious gift you can give your family. Bottom line: spend time with your kids enjoy God‘s gifts to us.
